Monique Smit turns children into confectioners and chefs

Volendam is a creative, educational and delicious form of children’s entertainment richer. In the brand new, colorful kitchen from Kids Kitchen, the little ones can bake and cook to their heart’s content. Under the professional guidance of Monique Smit (31), children learn the intricacies of the baking and cooking profession. And of course, fun comes first! Children from 3 years old are welcome to attend fun baking and cooking workshops and courses and to celebrate birthdays in the Kids Kitchen.

After a career as a history teacher and later a period in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monique Smit decided to take the plunge and pursue her dream.
On Saturday, that dream finally came true. “With my master’s degree in international relations in my pocket, I thought I had mapped out my future,” laughs Monique.
“It turned out differently. Every working day, I was more in doubt about office life. And that doubt was accompanied by an increasingly constructive enthusiasm for my great passion: baking.
I decided to resign and enroll in the bakery institute in Zaandam.

They specialize in people who want to change careers to baking. ” After graduating as a pastry chef, the Volendamse family started working at Bakers Bakery in Amsterdam.

First baking course
,, Although I had a desire to set something up for myself, I first decided to make meters at a reputable baker. In addition, I had meanwhile become the mother of two children myself. ” Monique enjoyed herself in the bakery in Amsterdam, but the corona pandemic turned things around.
cause. “It was getting quieter and quieter in our world, so I started focusing on my own business.” Monique was first introduced to a children’s kitchen in the capital. ,, There I saw how enthusiastic the children were and how much fun the tutors had. I was sold right away. To test whether the concept would also make an impact in Volendam, I started arranging a baking course during the Sinterklaas period. I rented the kitchen in De Singel and told my story via social media. All seats were reserved in no time. “
In the kitchen, Monique could breathe a sigh of relief. ,, The children had the time of their lives and afterwards I got an incredible number of sweet reactions from parents. It gave me confidence to start organizing baking classes every Wednesday afternoon.
Although I now also provide cooking workshops for children, in the initial phase I focused primarily on baking. For example, apple pies and cupcakes, and all without the help of Dr. Oetker, right? ” Monique laughs. ,, The concept became more and more popular, I got inquiries for groups on holidays and weekends. Unfortunately, I could not go into De Singel’s kitchen. After working from De Singel for a year and a half, I decided to look for something for myself. And it has finally happened. ”

Within four weeks, Monique’s father-in-law Adalbert and other craftsmen transformed the room into a cozy and colorful kitchen space. “I am so incredibly happy with the end result. Kids Kitchen now actually has the dream kitchen to accommodate children. Children from 3 years can come to Kids Kitchen for fun and educational cooking and baking workshops, various courses and of course children’s parties. Fun and learning baking and cooking skills go hand in hand in our kitchen. ” Children never get bored under Monique’s supervision. Recently, I baked cupcakes with a group of kids during a workshop. Of course, they are allowed to taste what they have made here in the kitchen, but often they are so excited about who they all want to make something that it does not happen.
When the baked goods are to be in the oven, we start decorating the packaging. A box for dad, a box for mom, a box for grandma. They want to show everyone proudly and taste what they have made. That’s good, right? “

children’s parties
Children’s parties are an exception when it comes to tasting the delicious creations on site. “We have a customized program for parties. Then, for example, we make a high tea. Occasionally the children get a glass of orange juice and a biscuit, but in the end they show off the homemade high tea all by themselves. And then it’s time to taste. It will always be an unforgettable party! ” Monique counts the days down until she can welcome the little students into her brand new cooking room. “I am really looking forward to introducing children to the kitchen. And of course I hope that all children from the region will visit us at some point! ”
