Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase is an SUV limousine

After Mulsanne’s disappearance in 2020, the brand new Flying Spur was faced with the arduous task of accommodating all customers from the larger limousine. Still, Bentley has to come up with an extra alternative because Flying Spur cannot keep the entire Mulsanne clientele at Bentley despite its enlarged dimensions. The second alternative is the Bentayga EWB.

A Mulsanne customer is not a Flying Spur buyer, as it turns out. At least not everyone. In Bentley’s eyes, there are too few owners of the large limousine left with the brand, now that the top model is no longer in production. Mulsanne owners may see the Flying Spur as a step backwards. Not only that, buyers in the luxury segment also prefer an SUV over a sedan. That’s why Bentley is coming up with another body variant of the Bentayga, which will then keep the Mulsanne buyer with the brand. The difference between the two types? Eighteen whole centimeters and it is entirely to the benefit of the rear seat passengers.

Eighteen centimeters extra for Bentley Bentayga

Bentley calls offspring unchanged Bentayga, but adds Extended Wheelbase to the name. It’s a name that clarifies what you can expect as a customer. The wheelbase is longer. But it needs further explanation, because the driver does not notice anything. Yes, something. More on that later. The difference in length is 18 cm and these are noticeable and visible directly from the B-pillar. The extra inches are completely in the back door as it also benefits the legroom at the rear.

The car length also grows by eighteen whole centimeters because there is no more than a greater wheelbase. However, the growth is at the expense of the luggage space, although this does not apply to all types. The English choose not to place the furniture on the second row of seats a little in the trunk, to achieve even more legroom, the car manufacturer optionally mounts a refrigerator in the back. And the refrigeration unit protrudes behind the second row of seats, in the cargo space. Like the roller mechanism on the third belt at the back. Luggage volume therefore varies and is only 380 liters in one version, 484 liters in the other.

Four or five seats

The second row of seats is where it happens in the Bentayga EWB. You can access the rear row of seats by opening the larger and particularly heavy rear doors. The manufacturer provides an electrically assisted opening / closing mechanism, while you can also operate the rear doors at full electric power. Due to their 18 cm extra length, the entrance opening is extra large. Two or three seats are available at the rear, depending on the selected seat configuration. The extended wheelbase is available as a four-seater and a five-seater. A seven-seater, such as that of the already available Bentayga, has not been developed.

The customers surveyed during the development indicate that they do not need this. As a four-seater, the EWB has two separate seats separated by a high center tunnel with a refrigerator and glass holders. In addition, Bentley offers a three-seater interior, with a choice of three full seats or a 2 + 1 configuration. In the latter case, the middle seat is more of an emergency seat than a place where you would like to stay from Groningen to Maastricht. Just say Transavia instead of KLM Business Class.

From relaxation to business

Bentley calls the most luxurious seat specification Airline Seat, a bit of an inexpensive name for premium furniture. You can adjust the seats in 22 different positions via a mobile device. In Relax Mode, the angle of the backrest is not less than 40 degrees, while the backrest in Business Mode is almost upright. Seat heating and ventilation are of course present, but also a massage function that has 177 pressure points and takes three hours to complete an entire cycle.

The occupant of the rear seat on the right side can push and fold the front passenger seat forward, giving the person even more legroom. The ‘VIP Mode’ function also works with Relax Mode.

Shorter turning radius

For the driver, the living space is unchanged. The only thing the driver notices is that the Bentayga is an extended wheelbase. The EWB is the first and so far only SUV from Bentley to have four-wheel steering. This ensures that the limousine SUV has a shorter turning circle than the existing version. The driver is also not directly under the panoramic roof. Due to the longer wheelbase and focus on the rear seat passengers, Bentley has placed the glass roof at the rear.

The size of the window is the same as on the short Bentayga. The 12.5 cm larger metal part between the windscreen and the panoramic roof is one of the external features of the Extended Wheelbase. In addition, Bentley adapts the grille design, as well as the wheel design.

So far only V8

Bentley only announces Bentayga Extended Wheelbase with a 4.0-liter V8 engine. The power source provides 550 hp and generates a torque of 770 Nm. The eight-cylinder engine catapults the SUV limousine from standstill to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds, bringing it to 290 km / h. The manufacturer may not say anything about other engine versions yet, they will definitely come. However, the W12 power source is an exception, as the prestigious car brand calls the twelve-cylinder ‘sporty’, something that does not fit the character of the Extended Wheelbase.

With the 5.32-meter-long Bentayga Extended Wheelbase, Bentley believes it will appeal to customers mainly in America and China. The manufacturer assumes that 45 percent of Bentley’s SUV sales come from the long variant.
