Bosch Rexroth expands portfolio of electro-hydraulic actuators with Cytromotion • AT-Drive technology

Bosch Rexroth expands its portfolio of standardized autarkic axes with CytroMotion. With the help of this new compact actuator, linear movements with forces of up to 110 kN can be realized in a more compact, efficient and durable way in a wide range of machines and systems. CytroMotion is purely electrically controlled and also simplifies construction and commissioning. Bosch Rexroth shows CytroMotion for the first time at the Hannover Messe.

Linear motions with high forces and micro-accurate positioning can be found in many machines and systems. A compact, simple and affordable solution is required for the technical realization. In addition, the need for greater energy efficiency and process reliability is increasing.

Autarchic shafts meet more than these requirements by combining hydraulic power density and robustness in a compact, energy-efficient, low-maintenance system solution. The new self-sufficient CytroMotion realizes the associated potential benefits in the power class up to 6.2 kW.

Compact, integrated solution

CytroMotion combines the standard components electric motor, hydraulic pump and cylinder with important control functions and interlocking functions into a compact, integrated solution with a hermetically sealed hydraulic section and pure electrical control.

Optional components include a digital road measurement system with an industry-standard SSI interface, a circuit variant with variable force-reducing rapid traverse and a pressure relief device for adjustable maximum force limitation.

New possibilities for machine building

The innovative design approach opens up new constructive and functional perspectives for machine and plant construction. Compared to conventional linear axes, the design allows a significantly longer stroke within the same installation space.

A number of benefits are achieved throughout the life cycle. For example, the electrical control is comparable to an electromechanical shaft and is realized via a Bosch Rexroth frequency converter or from a third supplier.

Engineering and commissioning require no knowledge of hydraulics and take place within the customer’s well-known control architecture. An online configurator helps to find the optimal drive solution for the respective application in minutes. The installation also takes place without pipes, hoses or filters.

Up to 80% less energy consumption compared to conventional hydraulics

During operation, CytroMotion in combination with modern control technology not only increases the process quality but also the energy efficiency. While linear motions and forces can be controlled electronically precisely and easily, the self-supporting shaft reduces power consumption and proportional CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional hydraulics.

The AC drive only uses electricity when actual power is needed. In load holding function, integrated shut-off valves support the applied loads.

Wide range of applications

CytroMotion is qualified for a wide range of applications. This ranges from applications in power plants and in metalworking to pressing and joining applications and ring rolling in the steel industry. In addition, the built-in hydraulic system is also suitable for testing and quality assurance, as well as for use in the process and food industry.

Condition monitoring

For maximum availability, CytroMotion also supports additional condition monitoring. To easily determine process forces and monitor internal system parameters, open interfaces and a pressure sensor system are integrated. This also makes it possible to detect deviations in potentially critical process parameters at an early stage and prevent unplanned errors.

In addition, the hermetically sealed system ensures low maintenance operation. While electromechanical shafts may require external or cyclic lubrication, CytroMotion will run significantly longer with the same factory oil filling. Although the sensor needs to be replaced, the housing remains tightly sealed.

Less noise due to internal gear pump

The self-supporting shaft is also exemplary low-noise: the low-noise internal gear pump limits noise emissions to a maximum value of 70 dB (A), depending on the application and installation. This value roughly corresponds to the noise level in an open office space.

The electro-hydraulic axes complement the overall Bosch Rexroth portfolio, which also includes hydraulic and electromechanical solutions. CytroMotion is Rexroth’s second electrohydraulic actuator. In late 2020, the company introduced the innovative CytroForce.
