Dozens of gyms in the Haarlemmermeer are very outdated, and according to teachers, some are even unsafe due to delayed maintenance. This is evident from a tour among forty gymnastics teachers who work out in these gyms every day. Rejected, worn materials, poor acoustics and no ventilation options are mentioned as the biggest problems.
Shortly after the last bell rang, Leon Ploem, sports teacher at the Oranje Nassauschool in Badhoevedorp, took us to the Het Voortouw gym. “The large materials are of dramatic quality. All ring sets have been rejected since the beginning of the year, but nothing is being done about them,” he gives as an example.
Rejected materials and poor acoustics
The situation at the Zijdewinde fitness center in Vijfhuizen is also worrying. Teacher Chelsey Borchers can no longer use rejected materials, but it does not stop there: Chelsey wears hearing protection in class because of the poor acoustics: “If I do not, I will lie in bed at night with a ringing in my ears. “
And this nuisance is not only experienced by the teacher. Several students report that they are bothered by the noise every single gym class.
The inventory shows that many gyms have similar problems: windows that can not be opened, mold in the changing rooms, wasp nests and rejected materials seem to be the normal procedure.
‘Frequently visited gyms’
Haarlemmermeer municipality owns the gyms, but has since 2014 outsourced their care to sports funds. They are responsible for the daily maintenance, manage the relevant fitness centers and are responsible for the maintenance and replacement of the sports equipment. Technical coordinator Ruud Wurtz says he knows no better than that gyms are visited frequently and that there is good contact with the schools.
“The question is whether anything is being done with our reports”
Maud Friedel is a gymnastics teacher at De Tovercircle in Hoofddorp and says that the contact is very difficult: “We email and call Sports Foundations regularly. Sometimes nothing is done about it, and sometimes it happens very quickly. But it is always doubtful , whether it happens at everything and, if so, when.
Councilor not informed
As a result of this story, last week a council question was put to the responsible councilor Marjolein Steffens: “I am not aware of that”, replied she about the poor condition of gyms in Haarlemmermeer. According to her, the maintenance is ‘sober and efficient’, and ‘somewhat outdated’ gyms like in Vijfhuizen need a little extra care.

Councilor Marjolein Steffens late for questions from NH News know:
“We do not know of any specific problems (Badhoevedorp, Vijfhuizen and Nieuw-Vennep). The municipal property portfolio in Haarlemmermeer, which also includes the gym and sports facilities, dates largely from the 1970s and 1980s and is therefore now something dated At the time of construction, the requirements for acoustics, climate, ventilation, interior design and material use were very different.
In the coming months, we will have an external agency conduct an objective study of the condition of the indoor gym and sports facilities, which will look at both technical condition and functionality. It gives us insight into the investments to improve the portfolio, make it more sustainable and adapt it to the requirements. “
“I think the council was negligent”
“The current situation says something about the communication between the school and the municipality,” says Jorieke Steenaart, education adviser at the Royal Association for Sports Education (KVLO). It also says something about the duty of care the municipality has with regard to educational housing. “I think they were negligent,” Steenaart said.
According to her, it is important that teachers report to their employer. They could then contact the municipality, which in turn had to take action. Yvonne Woestenburg, director of the Oranje Nassau school in Badhoevedorp, says that she has passed on various reports from the teachers. Chelsey Borchers would also have reported several times to management.
