Dassault Systèmes announces the next project in the program ‘The Only Progress is Human’, which focuses on the themes of heritage and the future. ‘Living Heritage’ is a student initiative that gives current and future generations the opportunity to experience six UNESCO World Heritage Sites through a virtual world or digital twin that they have existed in the past. At the same time, on the basis of this, they develop the competencies to innovate for a more sustainable world.
World Heritage digital twins
For ‘Living Heritage’, 32 students from six teams from Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and the US used the Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform to explore the Colosseum, Babylon’s Hanging Gardens, Konark Sun Temple, Pompeii, Porta Nigra and almost rebuild Shuri Castle. Led by mentors from Dassault Systèmes and supported by 3DEXPERIENCE Edu, the teams quickly learned how to work with the same integrated modeling, simulation, information intelligence and digital collaboration applications that the industry uses. They then created scientifically accurate and data-enriched virtual twins of the sites. 3DEXPERIENCE Edu’s role in this is important as this program helps as many as seven million students each year to develop in-demand industrial skills.
The virtual twins (digital twins) represent both the visible and the invisible. They reveal insights into the design of each construction and show what has been lost or damaged in whole or in part over time. With virtual twins, it also becomes clear how these designs have affected history and how they can affect future designs. With the new technical knowledge and know-how gained during the education, students can apply these skills as soon as they enter the labor market themselves. The virtual twins they have developed as part of Living Heritage can also be used by others to teach, study and learn.
Learn from the past to improve the future
“Dassault Systèmes is a science-based company. We have been a catalyst for human progress for 40 years. Our passion and creativity have enabled the virtual world to enhance and expand the real world. It has resulted in conversations that build bridges between the generations. These conversations provide insight into past results and help and inspire those who focus on future projects, ”said Victoire de Margerie, Vice President, Corporate Equity, Marketing & Communications, Dassault Systèmes. “’Living Heritage’ is, so to speak, a celebration of this common heritage. It invites us to explore how today’s solutions can give us a better understanding of the past. It helps unlock learning opportunities and future generations to chart the path to a better future. We have been a strong partner for academia for four decades. We are always amazed at the creativity of the students who use our 3DEXPERIENCE platform. ”
The teams will present their Living Heritage projects at the Cité de la Réussite in Paris on June 25 and 26, including a virtual reality experience that allows everyone to discover the places in an interactive way. The projects can also be viewed on the Dassault Systèmes website.
‘The Only Progress is Human’ was launched in 2020 and offers a number of projects aimed at raising awareness of societal and environmental challenges. The program also serves to inspire the use of virtual worlds to devise and develop sustainable innovations. In addition to ‘Living Heritage’, ‘The Only Progress is Human’ also includes ‘Virtual Harmony’, a unique musical and visual experience that shows how virtual worlds can change the way we experience emotions, and ‘Water for Life’, a series of initiatives to help industry consume water more intelligently to better protect the world’s most valuable resource.
