Why the relationship between Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett is so controversial | NOW

Mountains of criticism, (false) accusations and (partial) abandonment of a title: The relationship between the Norwegian princess Märtha Louise and the American shaman Durek Verrett is a bit like a fairy tale. Why does their love affair arouse so much opposition from the press and the public?

While most royal relationships develop in secret and then are publicly announced, it was very different with 50-year-old Märtha Louise.

In 2019, the princess, the eldest daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, announced via Instagram that she has got a new boyfriend.

She has been separated from author Ari Behn for three years at the time. “When you meet your soulmate, you know it. I’m lucky to have found mine,” the Norwegian writes with a picture of Verrett, who also has Norwegian roots. “I am so happy and blessed to call him my friend.”

No surprise that her boyfriend is active in the spiritual realm

Such a person from the royal family does not usually quite attack such a thing, but Märtha Louise’s reputation is already at that time a bit controversial. For example, the princess claims to have telepathic powers and to be able to talk to animals.

So it comes as no surprise that the Norwegian princess has fallen in love with someone who is also active in the spiritual realm. Verrett says he has been working as a shaman since he was twelve: someone who makes contact with the spirit world to heal people and to be able to predict something.

The two met during a healing of the princess at Verrett. “I looked him in the eye and said, ‘I know you already,'” she tells an American talk show. And he answered, ‘It was written in the stars before we were born, that one day we should meet.’ “

The shaman then moves into the world of celebrities for a while. He’s good friends with actors like Chris Pine and Selma Blair and is even Gwyneth Paltrow’s spiritual advisor. He also writes articles for her lifestyle platform goop

Märtha Louise is not a ‘private princess’

While it all sounds loving and romantic, the public does not have much positive to say about their relationship. Verrett works in a rather controversial way. For example, persons who allow themselves to be treated by the shaman must give him written permission for him to touch their genitals.

His lifestyle – filled with luxurious parties and other superficial and materialistic matters – also raises quite a few eyebrows in light of his existence as a shaman: this people can not reconcile. And the now-deleted message in which Verrett writes that he is “a reptile from another planet” already arouses astonishment.

Shortly after the start of their relationship, the couple decides to start working together. They go by the name The princess and the shaman on a trip together. However, they also face resistance. The public finds it unacceptable that Märtha Louise uses her royal title for commercial purposes.

In consultation with her family, she decides that she will only use the title of princess when performing royal and official duties. She describes it as a “good solution”. Märtha Louise is not a successor to the throne, because in Norway the eldest son (in this case Hakon) and not the eldest daughter is the first in the line of succession.

The shaman waits a little longer with his courtship

When her ex-husband Behn committed suicide at the end of 2019, many believe that it was Märtha Louise’s new relationship that was the cause. “They said that if Durek had not been there, it would not have happened,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair

The shaman actually wants to propose to his beloved – even the king and his wife have already been asked for permission – but given the circumstances, he decides not to. He makes no secret of the fact that Verrett has plans to marry the princess. The ring is already designed, he says.

Verrett is seriously ill

The couple is considering moving to the United States. The two already spend time together regularly in Verrett’s home country. “They are much more open to this,” explains Märtha Louise. “In Norway, they do not think it is possible for you to have a relationship with a shaman.” Nevertheless, the princess will continue to live in Europe for the time being, also because she has three children who go to school here.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the shaman announces that the engagement is official. “She said yes,” he writes on Instagram. But in addition to all the festivities surrounding their upcoming wedding, they are also going through a difficult time. Verrett is seriously ill: he has kidney problems and has to go to the hospital for dialysis three to five times a week. A planned transplant was canceled in late May.

Relatives have at least given the Princess and Verrett their blessing. On the Norwegian royal family’s website, congratulations come from her parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja. Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Mette-Marit also wish the couple good luck. “Durek is the man who makes my heart beat faster, who sees me and my potential. He makes me laugh and I can be vulnerable with him. I’m so glad I can keep growing with this handsome man “, writes the princess.
