Questioning, Anouk holds the door up to her hotel room. I doubt: should we want to love, or is that not what she means? Because I can not find the words to it, I make a questioning gesture. Apparently a vague gesture, for she imitates me surprised. The door closes and she does not open it again. Unfortunately. I gently knocked my head against the door. I would have liked to have been convinced by her that it was a good idea. Disappointed, I enter my room.
quarrel with Sara
I do not understand women anymore. A few weeks ago, I found a crying Sara in the office. “I’m so sorry,” she sniffed. It takes me 10 minutes to stretch tissues, iron her hair and get a glass of water before I understand what she was so upset about.
Sara was completely upset by our fight in the hotel bar a few weeks ago. She had gone straight from that weekend to her Tinder infatuation to let go of the steam. I did not know she had it. Apparently she wanted to get back to the man quickly. “Look, it’s Roger.” I looked at the pictures of a boy in front of a Porsche and in a sophisticated kitchen. He seemed like a fool to me, but he makes her happy, so I said he seemed like a nice guy. It made her cry even harder. “Not fat?” I asked innocently.
“Yes. Very nice.” And very fruitful, for what I failed to do in all those months, the lucky Rogier succeeded in one night: Sara is pregnant. Practice. That’s part of it, but I kept my face straight. “How nice of you,” I said as cheerfully as possible. And Sara freaked out. Where did I get the courage to say that to her? Or maybe I was out of my mind? And that our relationship apparently meant a little to me. Luckily I’m in Brussels with Anouk now and I do not have to think about Sara and the baby for a while.
The second day of our business trip, I close my laptop at 8 o’clock in the evening, tired but satisfied: “Should I reserve a table in the restaurant or would you rather have something from room service?” To my surprise, Anouk chooses the latter: “I do not want to dress up.”
And then a little later we sit on the steamed fish (she) and fried steak (me). “Shall we open a joint account?” I suggest. Our daughter Lente turns out to declare costs to both of us. If we pay everything for the kids from one account, we prevent those kinds of jokes.
“Well, then I can sleep peacefully again,” Anouk replies, having explained what the intention is.
“How did you sleep last night?” I’m asking.
“I’ve been turning and turning for a while.”
“Naturally. You always have problems with other beds. The second night always goes better”, I comfort.
“Yes, it was awkward. But I threw and turned for us too.”
“Yes. It was a little strange when yesterday suddenly ended. I wanted to ask you for a drink, but the door slammed. I hesitated for a while if I should call you back, but I thought it was better not to. . “
“Better?” I’m asking.
Anouk nods: “I find the situation between us confusing. One moment we are fighting each other out of the tent, but the last few months it has gone the other way. Inviting you to my room felt like an invitation to my bed. “
“Okay.” We are both quiet for a moment. So Anouk had the same feeling as me. “You have already invited me to your bed once.”
“That night with the good wine from the cellar.”
She giggles. “Then I was intoxicated.”
“Exactly. And then you invited me to your bed, but I did not answer. You were drunk, so I was not sure if you really wanted this.”
Anouk smiles at me, “Have you really done that?”
“Yes, I put you to bed and then I went.”
“I thought so too.”
“May I thank you for that.”
“Please.” Anouk gets up and walks towards me. She bends over, grabs my face and presses her lips against mine. Automatically I open my mouth and our tongues make their familiar circles. Delicious. Soft and probing at first; then faster.
I put my arms around her and caress her blissful buttocks. Then I pull her up on my lap and continue to kiss hungry. My hand slides into her dress while my mouth searches for the sensitive spots on her neck. She loves it when I kiss it. Still. She growls happily. “Fortunately,” I think, “I understand women again.”
The next morning I wake up alone.
