This way you can keep your children still in the back seat. Seven tips

How do you prevent it from turning into a fight in no time, and how do you keep them busy without them asking ‘are we still there’ every half hour? We asked parent coach and psychologist Joyce Akse.

“A drive, and certainly such a long sitting time when going on holiday with the family, is of course very boring,” Akse begins. “You rarely sit in the back seat for 5 minutes. The drive to the holiday destination takes hours or even days, and once you are there, you also take regular excursions where the children have to get back in the car. ”

“Children like to move, they are curious, they want to discover things – and it is difficult from the comfort of your seat in the car. They can not move as they please and the view may change slightly, but after a while the variety disappears again. And then there are the rules: they have to wear seat belts or in a car seat, they have to keep their hands to themselves … all factors that make it difficult to hold it properly and for a long time. ”

Akse therefore gives these 7 tips:

1. Prepare well and make appointments with your child

“It happens maybe once or twice a year that you take a long drive. Because your child may not be used to this, it is important to set expectations. Explain what you want them to do: that they should sit still for a long time, wear seat belts, that it is nice if they speak in a normal voice and do not shout, and that they should hold hands and feet to themselves . It makes it easier to make appointments that you can return to later. ”

2. Accept that the journey takes longer and that you have some time for yourself

“It is simply like this: A car trip takes longer when traveling with children. If you adapt to it, it is already much easier for you. Accept that it will not be a leisurely walk, give a lot of positive attention to the kids and go rested on the road. It helps! You often have to act as a leader in the situation. ”

Stop often and extensively for food and exercise

“Children are used to their rhythm and get hungry at regular times. It is therefore nice for them to stick to the times when one usually eats as much as possible. So keep this in mind as you prepare and plan your route. Ideally, you should stop every two hours to stretch your legs, and if you stop for lunch or a snack, then also make it an extensive meal and drinking time – do not stick to just 5 minutes. Ideally, you should stop at a parking lot with a playground or a field where kids can play and run and lose energy. You will see that it will be easier to sit still after this. ”

4. Pay attention to nap

“Just like with food and drink, children also like to take a nap when they are used to it. So keep a steady rhythm in this too. You can help your child with this by making it darker in the car and by making sure that there is a blanket, a pillow and a pet to sleep with. Skipping naps will only make your child tired, which encourages difficult behavior. You want to be in front of that. ”

5. Trading on signals

“‘You looked through my window!’ “You’re breathing too much in my direction!” All parents will recognize that the slightest annoyance can turn into big fights. If you pick up that kind of signal right away, you can turn an unpleasant situation around. to stop and approach the moods. And mention it too, if it goes well! Such some children. ”

6. Give them plenty to do

“Let them fill a bag with toys before the trip. This can be partly chosen by yourself, but you can also pack some things that you know will last for hours. It’s also nice to come up with a little surprise. If they have done it well for a long time, you have, for example, an activity book or a bill as a nice surprise. They are happy about that anyway, and they will not help you for a long time. ”

7. If things go wrong …

“It is important that you continue to speak calmly and that you stop as soon as possible. Sometimes it takes a while before there is a parking space, for example if you are in the middle of the highway. Then it is important that you clearly warn up to 2 times: ‘You are screaming now while we had a clear agreement on it. You should now speak normally. If that doesn’t work, you have to sit still. ‘ By sitting still, I mean a means that you can use to save things right away. It is then meant that they not only literally sit still – because they did so in the back seat anyway – but that they also really stop what they were doing. No coloring page or game book for a while. One minute is enough, then they can continue. This can be difficult, but it can also save you some time until there is an opportunity to stop. ”
