Three levers to deepen your relationship with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is not some mystical force. He’s not the weird kind of goosebumps or ticklish feeling you get when you’re in church. The Holy Spirit is a person and He wants to be with you! Here are three ways to develop a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit.

1. Develop an awareness of God
Paul said, “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). Being aware of God is the constant realization that God is ALWAYS with you. That’s a good thought! He is literally always with you. God does not want us to compromise our relationship with Him. I think many believers have developed this ‘quiet time syndrome’. The only time they spend with God is the hour they devote to Him each day.

God is not looking for an hour outside of your schedule. He is looking for friends. God wants to talk to you. He wants to talk to you about the things that are close to his heart. You might be typing at work or super busy, but you can still talk to him all day long. Talk to him while taking a break.

When I take a break from writing, I like to stop and focus on him. I say things like, “I love you, Holy Spirit. What are you thinking about now?” As you do this, you begin to develop an intimate relationship with Him.I have found that this discipline in your awareness of God will even rub off on your relationship on Earth!

I have been living this way for about ten years now and God has even started sharing his heart for others with me or giving me warnings when I meet people. The Holy Spirit wants to share His heart with you too! Practice being constantly aware of the one who never leaves you.

2. Invite the Holy Spirit as you read the Word

“…that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,

even the eyes of your understanding enlightened, to know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints…” (Eph 1:17-18)

If you want the Bible to open up to you and you want more revelation, invite the Holy Spirit to help you as you read the Bible! When I go to read God’s word, I say a prayer such as from the text above: “Lord, give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation. Lord, open my eyes so that I can see from your perspective when I read, not from a man’s perspective. I want a heavenly perspective. I invite you to open the Word and give me fresh manna for today!”

When I pray that way, I usually see the Word in a new way. Instead of striving to read, I actually read with God. Often He will emphasize a particular text and I will meditate on it. Then, through the verse, I often get a new revelation in my mind. Stay in the Word!

3. Pray in the Holy Spirit

“But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.” (Jude 1:20-21)

God provided an infallible plan when He sent Jesus to die on the cross, rise from the dead, and then place the Holy Spirit within us. If you don’t know what to pray or how to pray, remember that God has put the Holy Spirit in you and He knows how to pray.

When God made the plan for your life, the Holy Spirit was there! The Holy Spirit knows God’s predetermined will for your life. If you have the gift of tongues, start praying for at least 30 minutes a day. When you pray in tongues, your mind is barren, you do not know what you are praying, but your spirit joins the Father and the Holy Spirit prays the perfect will on your behalf.

Before the enemy can attack, the Holy Spirit is already sending angels without you realizing it. This is what happens when you are faithful to pray in tongues, read the Word, and build your relationship with the Holy Spirit!

Keep it simple…
If you want more intimacy with the Holy Spirit, realize that He is always with you. Ask Him to shine His light on the Bible for you! Pray in tongues! As you develop deep intimacy with the Holy Spirit, you will experience heaven on earth!
