Fewer inhabitants drowned in 2021

The 80 residents died from accidental drowning. Over the past ten years, 73 percent of these drownings have occurred in open water: a ditch, river, canal, channel, recreational lake, lake, pond, or in the ocean. 21 percent of the drownings happened in and around the house.

Biggest drop in drowning among young children since 1950s

Since 1950, the number of accidental drownings has fallen sharply, especially among children under 10 years of age. Since the 1980s, the decline in the number of accidental drownings has been less pronounced. In recent decades, the number of accidental drownings has been highest among people aged 60 and over.
