Voith comes to the IAA Transportation fair in Hannover with new innovations in e-mobility. With the Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS) and the Plug & Drive H2 storage system, it presents two products that can contribute to making the transport sector more sustainable. This is stated by TTM.nl on its website. IAA Hannover takes place from 20 to 25 September.

Since its introduction in 2019, Voith has continued to develop its Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS) and has gained a foothold in more and more commercial vehicle segments. For buses, the portfolio consists of the HD (heavy duty) variant, which with its 340 kW IPMS engine is particularly suitable for double-decker and articulated buses.

In addition, Voith offers an MD variant (medium duty) with a capacity of 260 kW, which is specially optimized for solo buses and exclusively for inner city use. Customers worldwide appreciate the excellent efficiency of this system, which was recently confirmed by the independent UTAC institute. With an efficiency of 0.69 kWh/km, the Wrightbus StreetDeck Electroliner is the most efficient e-double decker in the world. VEDS plays an important role in this success.

Suitable for conversion of existing vehicles

The concept supports battery systems from a wide range of manufacturers and is also suitable for use in fuel cell propulsion systems for electric vehicles. Thanks to its compact design, VEDS does not require additional installation space in chassis designed for internal combustion engines. Existing car fleets with conventional diesel, hybrid or gas drives can therefore be converted very easily.

Automated electric transmission

With VEDS HD+, the company is also introducing its first drive concept for heavy trucks. Special configurations for garbage trucks, inner-city logistics or long-distance transport ensure efficient driving in every use. At the heart of the system is a new innovative four-speed automated electric transmission.

This makes optimal traction available for any driving situation and under any load condition. At the same time, it ensures that the electric motor always works with optimal efficiency. To power the VEDS HD+, customers can choose between two electric motors named Evo, with peak outputs of 330 and 390 kW respectively.

VEDS HD, VEDS MD and VEDS HD+ meet the requirements of ISO 26262 (Automotive Functional Safety) and the new requirements for Automotive Cyber ​​​​Security (ISO 21434). This internationally applicable standard protects the vehicle against external manipulation and ensures functionality – for example by preventing unauthorized access to electronically controlled driving and braking systems.

Plug & Drive H2 Storage System

Voith’s expertise as a system supplier is reflected in the new Plug & Drive H2 storage system. In keeping with its holistic approach, customers get everything from a single source, from the tank atomizer to the fuel cell intake, including a patented installation system to accommodate the hydrogen tanks.

Voith uses pre-impregnated fibers, so-called TowPregs, as material for tanks, which Voith itself manufactures. A special wrapping process is used in production, which enables optimized wrapping layers. This allows for higher hydrogen storage rates without compromising safety, even at high tank pressures.

Here, Voith focuses on 700 bar technology to ensure long ranges, even with limited installation spaces. Combined with short refueling times – it takes around ten minutes to fill up completely – this results in greater economic efficiency for the operator compared to conventional systems.

Trucks and construction equipment

The Plug & Drive H2 storage system is primarily designed for heavy commercial vehicles, construction vehicles and similar applications where the use of battery-electric concepts does not make sense from an economic or technical point of view. Voith also guarantees durability and reusability throughout the entire life cycle.
