Bentley continues Bacalar Mulliner

With the end of the limited production run approaching, Bentley Mulliner is preparing to present the next par-off model. The manufacturer has not yet announced what the collector’s item will be. At least it won’t be a two-seater speedster a la Bacalar.

Bentley Mulliner has always stated that its activities fall into three categories. Bentley’s special business department dresses up the standard models entirely according to the customer’s personal wishes. In addition, the business unit reproduces classic models. And finally, it releases few-off models.

Bacalar Mulliner

The latter models include the Bacalar Mulliner, presented in 2020, of which only twelve have seen the light of day. The car manufacturer is now preparing for the delivery of the last four examples. Eight have already been delivered worldwide, including one in the Benelux, as revealed by Autovisie in 2020.

With the Bacalar, Mulliner released a model with a unique body design and interior. The shape of the body – mainly made of carbon fiber – was fixed, but Bentley Mulliner’s clientele could give their personal wishes regarding the decoration of the body. It went further than just the color. The manufacturer offered customers the opportunity to tint specific areas with a different shade. One of the buyers chose not to equip the car with side mirrors, making the replica a direct one-off. A second set of doors with side mirrors and an extra key were supplied with the car, as Autovisie revealed in this video.

No access to Bentley creations

The customer was also able to fulfill his specific desire for interior design. Bentley Mulliner chose special colors for this. In any case, that interior is completely different from that of the Continental GT, on which the car is based. Only the center of the steering wheel is replaceable, just as only the door handles are replaceable on the outside. For the decoration of the Bacalar, each customer was in direct contact with Mulliner’s design department, who used the design department’s special configurator for the configuration of the open two-seater. Despite the twelve buyers not having access to the other buyers’ creations, no two Bacalars were produced the same.

The last examples are now leaving the factory in Crewe, England. It is later than planned. The automaker expected to finish the project in 2022, but the construction of the Bacalar Mulliner started later due to the corona crisis. Another delay followed this year. The expectation was that the last car would go to the customer around April/May. It takes Bentley Mulliner about six months to build one.

Exclusive to world premiere and test session

Bentley planned the world premiere of the Bacalar for the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020. Autovisie was the only Dutch media to see the car a few weeks before. Soon after, the corona crisis broke out and forced Bentley to postpone the launch of the car. Ultimately, the open two-seater was shown in March 2020. The model shown was a design studio that was built by hand and could reach a maximum speed of 50 km/h. Autovisie was the only media outlet outside of England that was allowed to run that studio model. At that time, the Bacala was completely sold out. Production started more than a year later.
