Autovisie is always looking for used cars for the enthusiast, which is why you go through the listings on the sales page Gasmetaal.nl. This time we found a Peugeot 404 Familiale.
In the 1960s, Peugeot launched a car that would quickly become extremely popular: the 404. The family car had a distinctive style and was also popular on the African continent. One of the popular models of the 404 was the Familiale, a 7-seater car with lots of luggage space.
Peugeot 404: a classic
Peugeot started producing the 404 in 1960. The car was designed by the famous design house Pininfarina, which was also responsible for the design of cars from Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Maserati. The 404 was sold as a sedan, pick-up and station wagon and would be a huge success for the brand with the lion logo, which was recently ‘modernised’. The brand flipped through the history books and took the logo from 1960, the year of the 404, as the basis for the current new variant.
The 404 was and is a very popular car, of which more than 2.8 million were sold. has been sold worldwide. In the beginning, Peugeot only produced this 404 with petrol engines, which were later equipped with injection systems. Due to the high demand for this spacious tourer, versions with diesel engines followed.
Loved in Africa
The first model of the 404 from 1960, the sedan, had a four-speed gearbox and a 72 hp engine. It was immediately one of the more seasoned engines, as the 404 fluctuated between 55 and 96 hp in the fifteen years it was sold in Europe. Peugeot also decided to address the gearbox: where the first models had a manual gearbox with four control gears, a three-speed ZF automatic would later also be offered.
After fifteen years, in 1975, Peugeot stopped production of the 404 in Europe. But the history of the classic stretches back even further than that. The car was also very popular and popular on the African continent. This was partly due to the successes achieved by the French in the rallies held there. Held in Kenya, the Safari Rally came under the name 404 in 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1968. The big Peugeot didn’t seem to stop when it was sold in Nigeria until 1988. Finally, the curtain finally fell on the pleasant Lion in 1991.
A spacious seven-seater
As mentioned, Peugeot brought several variants of the 404 to the market. One of these variants is this Familiale, a 7-seater car. The car was praised for its build quality and exquisite interior, but the car’s appearance was criticized.
Peugeot promoted the 404 Familiale as follows: “With the Peugeot Familiale it is possible to transport 7 to 8 people in a comfortable way, while the already large luggage compartment, if desired, can be made even larger by folding the third seat – 80 SAE hp petrol engine – 145 km/h also available with 68 SAE hp diesel engine – 128 km/h.” Officially, the car is a 7-seater car, but at Peugeot there was still room for one more person.
Peugeot 404 Familiale as an apartment
Autovisie finds a Peugeot 404 Familiale from 1969 with just over 60,000 kilometers of experience. The car has an LPG tank and is exempt from road tax. So cheap to run.
