Gartner Stocks Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies

Gartner presents its Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2022. The technologies included in the Hype Cycle are divided into three categories this edition: development and expansion of immersive experiences, accelerated AI automation, and optimized technology delivery.

“Emerging technologies offer transformational potential for businesses, but CIOs and technology innovation leaders are challenged to scale digital capabilities while improving sustainability in the face of increasingly limited resources,” said Melissa Davis, VP analyst at Gartner. “It is essential that organizations cut through the noise surrounding new technologies to accelerate change by leveraging innovations that drive competitive differentiation and efficiency.”

Insight into more than two thousand technologies

The Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies differs from other Gartner Hype Cycles in that it identifies key insights from more than 2,000 technologies and applied frameworks that Gartner profiles each year in a concise set of “must-know” emerging technologies and trends. These technologies and trends can deliver a high degree of competitive advantage over the next two to ten years (see Figure 1).

“All technologies on this Hype Cycle are at an early stage, but some are still in their infancy and there is great uncertainty about how they will develop. Such technologies pose greater risks to deployment, but potentially greater benefits to early adopters, who can assess and leverage them according to their organization’s ability to handle unproven technologies,” said Gary Olliffe, distinguished VP analyst at Gartner.

Three themes for new technology trends

Gartner identifies three themes for emerging technology trends in the Hype Cycle:

Develop and expand immersive experiences: the future of digital experience is compelling, according to Gartner. A collection of new technologies supports such experiences through dynamic virtual representations, environments and ecosystems of customers and people, as well as new forms of user engagement. These technologies allow individuals to manage their own identity and data and experience virtual ecosystems that integrate with digital currencies. These technologies help reach customers in new ways to amplify or open new revenue streams.

Technologies to watch that deliver evolving and growing immersive experiences are the metaverse, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), super apps and Web3, decentralized identity, digital people, customer digital twins and internal talent markets.

Accelerated AI Automation: AI adoption is expanding as an integral part of products, services and solutions. This accelerates the creation of specialized AI models that can be used to automate model development, training and deployment. AI automation reorients the role of humans in AI development, resulting in more accurate predictions and decisions, and faster time to expected benefits.

The technologies that support accelerated AI automation are autonomous systems, causal AI, fundamental models, generative design AI, and machine learning code generation.

Optimized technology delivery: successful digital businesses are built, not bought, argues Gartner. A number of new technologies are targeting communities of product, service and solution builders, such as fusion teams, and the platforms they use. These technologies provide feedback and insights that optimize and accelerate the delivery of products, services and solutions and increase the sustainability of business operations.

The critical technologies that optimize engineering delivery are augmented FinOps, cloud data ecosystems, cloud sustainability, compute storage, cybersecurity mesh architecture, data sensing, dynamic risk management, industrial cloud platforms, minimal viable architecture, observation-driven development, OpenTelemetry, and platform engineering.
