ERTMS: five engineering firms at work on three corridors

On 29 August, ProRail has finally awarded the engineering services for the design of three ERTMS corridors. For this purpose, ProRail forms a knowledge alliance with the five engineering companies Arcadis, Movares, Nexus Rail, Royal HaskoningDHV and Sweco. The corridors are the northern lines (ENL), Hanzelijn – Lelystad (EHL) and Schiphol – Amsterdam – Almere – Lelystad (ESAAL).

Digital train protection system

ERTMS is the future digital train protection system for the Dutch railways and will replace ATB, the current analogue protection system. ERTMS makes it easier for trains to cross the border. And it increases reliability, punctuality and safety.

From design to commissioning

The price includes the engineering services for the entire engineering process. From drawing up the design to testing and commissioning. Everything needed to achieve a provably secure ERTMS system.

Knowledge Alliance

We will work together in a knowledge alliance on the three corridors mentioned, as well as on the border section Kijfhoek – Belgium. The knowledge alliance facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experience between the various projects: between the engineering companies and with ProRail.

It is also a platform for transferring knowledge from the system supplier Thales. In this way, the aforementioned engineering companies can carry out all engineering services independently as quickly as possible. An important prerequisite for the rapid realization of the ERTMS program and its national rollout.

Different plots

Due to the necessary knowledge transfer and the complex planning, a combined tender from ENL, EHL and ESAAL was chosen. This makes it possible to combine parts of different projects in one plot. As a result, there is a good correlation with the existing capacity of the engineering companies and basis for expanding their capacity.

The various lots are allocated as follows:

  • Arcadis: sub-corridor Harlingen Haven – Leeuwarden, farm Leeuwarden and sub-corridor Amsterdam Muiderpoort – Weesp – Hilversum
  • Movares: underpass Almere Oostvaarders – Lelystad stable site (incl. stable site) and underpass Hoofddorp – Schiphol – Diemen
  • Nexus Rail: sub-corridor Leeuwarden – Stavoren and sub-corridor Leeuwarden – Groningen
  • Royal HaskoningDHV: sub-corridor Lelystad rest area – Hattemerbroek connection and sub-corridor Weesp – Almere Oostvaarders
  • Sweco: sub-corridor Groningen – Roodeschool/Delfzijl, sub-corridor Groningen – Nieuwschans/Veendam and Groningen railway station.

Design and development

In all projects (including Kijfhoek-Belgian border) the latest ERTMS system is used for the first time in the Netherlands. This system is being developed while the engineering companies are already working on the design of track sections.

The close cooperation between the engineering offices and ProRail ensures that ERTMS is used in the same way in all projects. This prevents various situations for drivers, traffic controllers and maintenance personnel.

From thinking to doing
