News: MG introduces 4 Electric

The new MG4 Electric enters the important C-segment in Europe with a choice of three versions. The basic version, Standard, has a 51 kWh battery, a theoretical range of up to 350 kilometers and a rear axle-mounted electric motor that produces 125 kW (170 hp) of power. The prices of the standard version start at € 28,990 euros.

The Comfort and Luxury versions both have a 64 kWh battery and a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor. This means that the Comfort version offers a theoretical range of up to 450 kilometers. The first units of the new MG4 Electric will be delivered in 2022 to customers who are part of the pre-order program.

Design

The design of the new MG4 Electric is the result of collaboration between the SAIC Motor Design Center in Shanghai and the London-based Advanced Design Studio and the Royal College of Art.

With a length of 4,287 mm, a width of 1,836 mm and a height of just 1,504 mm, the five-door hatchback is mid-sized. Thanks in part to the long wheelbase of 2,705 mm, the MG4 Electric promises a comfortable and spacious interior, while maintaining slim and sporty proportions. The volume of the luggage compartment varies depending on the version between 350 and 1,177 litres.

Striking headlights with 28 LEDs and six vertical stripes in fiberglass style, as well as the angled indicators give the MG4 Electric an unmistakable front. Three units for fog lights and dipped beam are combined with LED indicators. The influence of these lines is also reflected at the rear with complex LED taillights, consisting of 172 LEDs and an LED strip that runs almost the entire width of the vehicle. The two-tone roof and distinctive two-piece roof spoiler enhance the MG4 Electric’s lines and optimize its aerodynamics.

Depending on the version, the Cw value (coefficient of aerodynamic drag) is between 0.27 and 0.287. This is made possible, among other things, by the active cooling openings at the front (from the Comfort version), which only open when less cooling air is required. This provides approximately 30% improved aerodynamics, increasing range by up to 10%.

In addition, the 17-inch alloy wheels in ‘Tomahawk’ design are also aerodynamically optimized for the lowest possible energy consumption. On the Comfort and Luxury versions, the wheels, fitted as standard with 215/55 R17 Continental tires with low rolling resistance, are available in a two-tone paint. In terms of body colors, the MG4 Electric will be available in: Pebble Black, Dover White, Medal Silver, Andean Grey, Diamond Red, Brighton Blue and Fizzy Orange.

The interior of the MG4 Electric is deliberately minimalist. The floating design of the center console creates more space and integrates features such as storage space and a wireless phone charger into the luxury trim.

The double-spoke steering wheel with a minimalist design is adjustable in height and depth and equipped with leather upholstery from Comfort. The Luxury also has a heated steering wheel, as well as heated front seats and a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat.

The thinnest battery in its class

The new MG4 Electric uses the innovatively designed ‘ONE PACK’ battery which is the basis for the dynamic appearance of the MG4 Electric. The horizontal arrangement of the battery cells results in a height of only 110 mm. This makes it the thinnest battery in its class, with which the height of the vehicle could be kept extra low while still having sufficient ground clearance.

The battery is part of the MSP platform developed by parent company SAIC Motor. The architecture with an intelligent and modulating structure offers many advantages in terms of flexibility, space utilization, safety and driving behaviour. The structure is scalable and suitable for wheelbases between 2,650 and 3,100 mm, suitable for different body types ranging from hatchbacks to SUVs and sports cars.

The MG4 Electric is the first MG model in Europe based on this MSP platform and is offered with a choice of two battery variants. The MG4 Electric Standard combines a 51 kWh battery with a 125 kW (170 hp) and 250 Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels. This version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, reaches a top speed of 160 km/h and offers a theoretical range of up to 350 km. The battery can be charged at an AC charging point with a capacity of 6.6 kW, while fast charging (DC) with a capacity of up to 117 kW is possible. In the latter case, under ideal conditions, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in 40 minutes.

The Comfort and Luxury versions are equipped with a 64 kWh battery and a 150 kW (204 hp) and 250 Nm strong electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Both versions accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, while the top speed is also limited to 160 km/h. The theoretical range is set at 450 km for the Comfort version and 435 km for the Luxury version. Furthermore, an 11 kW AC onboard charger is standard on both models, while under ideal conditions the battery can be charged from 10 to 80% in 35 minutes with a 135 kW fast charger.

Handling

The combination of rear-wheel drive and an ideal weight distribution of 50:50 guarantees the MG4 Electric favorable handling. Like larger vehicles from European premium manufacturers, the MG4 Electric uses a MacPherson front suspension and a five-link rear axle. In combination with Bosch electric power steering, which adapts the steering force to the driving speed (light steering at low speeds and heavier at higher speeds) and three configurable modes (Light, Standard, Sport), the chassis claims very responsive and stable handling.

In urban areas, the MG4 Electric is easy to manoeuvre, thanks in part to its tight turning circle of just 10.6 metres. The Continental brake system with front and rear disc brakes provides a braking distance of 37 meters at 100 km/h. The MG4 Electric also offers the ability to slow down with the regenerative braking system, with a choice of different levels.

Connection

The MG4 Electric promises ease of use and practicality with space for up to five passengers and plenty of storage options. In the luxury version, the air conditioning is more efficient thanks to an additional heat pump. With the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system, the drive battery also acts as a mobile power bank to power external electrical devices such as e-bikes, smartphones and computers.

Inside, the MG4 Electric features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch central infotainment screen that controls the comprehensive MG iSMART connectivity system. Smartphones can be connected to the system via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, while other functions within infotainment, climate control and energy management can also be operated via the screen.

The different driving modes can be selected via the rotary knob on the floating center console. MG iSMART also offers an integrated navigation system with real-time traffic information and online support for the Luxury version, including voice control and remote control of various vehicle functions via the iSMART app.
