After an intensive week of testing, the MAN Lion’s City 12 E was compared with four competitors by a jury of 23 European trade journalists. The verdict was clear: the MAN electric bus was named the new “Bus of the Year 2023” at the IAA in Hanover. The jury was particularly impressed by the overall concept of the bus, which received points for range, reliability, comfort and, above all, durability.

“The new MAN Lion’s City 12 E has a ground-breaking design and a very comfortable and quiet interior. The driver’s cabin is one of the best on the market and very safe,” said jury chairman Tom Terjesen. “It’s not a converted diesel bus, but MAN has completely redesigned the electric bus, resulting in an award-winning mix of durability and ease of use.”

The award ‘Bus of the Year’ has been awarded for three decades and is considered the most important international award in the bus industry. “We are proud that our MAN Lion’s City E has been so well received,” says Rudi Kuchta, Head of Business Unit Bus at MAN Truck & Bus. “The award is another milestone in the success story that started in 2020, when we went into series production of the electric public transport bus. It now runs day in and day out in many European countries, generating excitement among bus operators, drivers, experts and passengers. The sales figures also make it clear how popular Løvens By E is. Since the start of sales, a total of more than 1,000 electric buses have been ordered.”

Battery strategies

One of the reasons for the success of this electric bus is that the experts at MAN Truck & Bus are continuously working on further development and improvements. Their goal: to optimally support the public transport operator in their daily work with innovative technology and individual solutions. To enable them to perfectly adapt their eBus to the usage applications, MAN offers, among other things, two battery strategies: In addition to the ‘Reliable Range’ strategy (up to 270 km range), there is also the ‘Maximum Range’ strategy for distances up to 350 km and more.

In addition, the new CO2 air conditioning system and the improved heating circuit provide even more efficiency. The modular batteries are also new, with bus operators able to specify the number of battery packs on a new electric MAN bus from autumn. This means that the emission-free public bus can be adapted even better to the customer’s individual needs and requirements in terms of range and passenger capacity.

Electric from Munich to Ireland

Part of the test the bus was assessed on was a journey across Europe en route to Ireland. During the ‘Electrifying Europe Tour’, the twelve meter public transport bus crossed eight countries in ten days. It covered a total distance of 2,448.8 kilometers and consumed a total of 1,763.7 kWh of energy, which corresponds to approximately 0.72 kWh per kilometer.

These values were achieved thanks to the efficient technology of Lion’s City E and an impressive recovery rate of 20.8 percent. The six lithium-ion battery packs (capacity 480 kWh) provided more than enough energy for the journey through cities, across the countryside and through mountains. Charging was only done at the end of the daily journey. Interim charging was not necessary due to the range of 350 kilometers on a full battery in these conditions.

Sixth time ‘Bus of the Year’

Since the establishment of the ‘Bus of the Year’ institute in 1989, the international expert jury awards the titles ‘Bus of the Year’ and ‘Coach of the Year’ to various bus types every year. European trade journalists pay particular attention to practicality. With the current award for the MAN Lion’s City 12 E, MAN Truck & Bus has already received the trophy for its MAN and NEOPLAN bus brands twelve times: six times as “Coach of the Year” (2022, 2020, 2006, 2004, 2000 , 1994) and also six times as ‘Bus of the Year’ (2023, 2015, 2005, 1999, 1995, 1990).
