Papendrecht’s new energy-neutral fire station fits in with the municipality’s sustainability policy. Because building elements had to be removable and reusable, the architect chose Rensons Linarte profiles for the facade cladding.
Three sides of the new fire station in Papendrecht – good for more than 400 m² – were finished with Linarte facade profiles from the Belgian manufacturer Renson. As these are individually clicked into slat holders on horizontal supports, this proved to be the ideal cladding to meet the client’s sustainability requirements (including demountability and reusability). “Our mission is to create buildings that are healthy and future-oriented”, explains architect Chi-Hang Chim (RoosRos Architecten). “We have to think carefully about what we are leaving for the next generations. We certainly do not want to burden them with construction waste. Therefore, we also wanted to make this building ‘removable’ on all possible levels. The clickable Linarte profiles fit that idea perfectly. And it is also a nice bonus that nothing can be seen to confirm the profiles.”
Block 30 profiles
Architect Chi-Hang Chim was inspired by a black box with a large viewing window for the design. By choosing the black Block 30 version of the Linarte profiles, he could also put this shape into practice.
“The architect came to Storax as a facade builder because he was looking for a vertical facade cladding that was extruded in one piece to the full height of the barrack walls (7.60 m), says Fabian Greveling (technical-commercial manager at Storax). “On the other hand, we consulted with our supplier Renson about this. There we were told that it was possible to extrude the Linarte profiles to that length, but that coating with that length was much more difficult. Therefore, the profiles for this project were powder coated externally by a specialized company.”
According to Greveling, the fact that Storax and Renson contributed ideas about the edge connections in the design and implementation phase, and that the corner solutions for Linarte had already been thought through down to the smallest detail, also appealed to the architect. In any case, according to him, it gave an extraordinary result, this time with a clear leading role for Linarte, where in other projects this type of facade cladding is normally used as an accent in combination with other materials. “Linarte is at the heart of the look of this building this time and is not just the icing on the cake,” he describes. “And also a bonus: the vertical design ensures that the aluminum cladding is always ‘clean’. The maintenance-friendly aspect also played an important role for the architect.”
“The installation of the facade cladding went very smoothly, although it required a bit of searching for the right action to get the extremely long profiles clicked into the slat holders”, says Fabian Greveling. “Wooden fillings or LED lighting were not integrated into the slatted wall here – although that is entirely possible with Linarte – but we have incorporated various water connections and doors into the facade cladding. A major advantage in terms of installation was that we could attach the horizontal supports to the slat supports directly on the pressure-resistant sandwich panels, without an additional underlying beam structure. And so we, as the contractor and Renson as the supplier, were involved early in the process – from surveying the architect’s interest to consulting, engineering and delivery – to bring this project to a successful conclusion together.”
“Linarte facade cladding gives architects many design options due to the different vertical aluminum facade profiles that can be combined”, concludes Fabian Greveling. “And the integration options for doors, lighting, logos, sockets and extinguishing facilities also make this system a facade cladding that can be personalized and perfected down to the smallest detail.”
