Stylish smartphone that charges super fast

IIn this Oppo Reno 8 Pro review, we look at the pros and cons of this smart new smartphone. With a starting price of €749, the Reno 8 is not a cheap device, but for that money you get an extremely stylish mid-range car with quite a few pluses. In particular, the attractive mirror design, the impressive sound from the built-in speakers and the fast-charging battery stand out.

design

The Oppo Reno 8 is probably the mirroriest smartphone we’ve ever laid hands on. The surface of the mint green tester we were allowed to try is so high-gloss that you can easily see your own reflection in it. The sides are finished in the same colour, but made of brushed steel. The front screen is deep black, glossy and protrudes slightly beyond the side edge. Like a jar of ink that is about to overflow.

The ooh’s-and-aah’s are definitely not in the air when you first take the device out of the packaging. This device feels super chic, is beautifully designed, light nice and firm in the hand and is simply dazzling.

Unfortunately, there are a number of disadvantages associated with the stylish design. Because the device is so very smooth on both sides, it is very sensitive to fingerprints that inevitably appear after a few minutes of use. In addition, the device is so incredibly smooth that it does not hold well on smooth, moving or sloping surfaces. Think of the folding table on the train: if you’re not paying attention, your device will slide right away.

Of course, all these problems are easily solved with a matching case. The disadvantage is that you don’t see much of the great design and the great color combination. Well, it’s certainly not unique to this smartphone.

Camera

The most striking feature of this device is undoubtedly the camera. With 2 large and 1 smaller lens and a flash on the back of the device, Oppo makes it clear that this device has big photography ambitions.

The lens block could have been a little less thick: it now protrudes in such a way that you can never lay your device flat. Combined with the smooth surface that we discussed above, it also ensures that your device tends to fall off your lap or a table more quickly. Can be solved with a case, but something to be aware of when using.

Photography with the Oppo Reno 8 is more than sufficient at first glance: the device takes beautiful photos with a nice color gradation that gives extra warmth to the images. Especially in night mode in low light. If the red-and-yellow look isn’t really your thing, you’ll need to edit the photos afterwards.

The wide-angle functionality that can be found on more and more new smartphones is also present on the Reno 8 and has an absolute added value. Although the standard photography can sometimes be a little underwhelming in terms of contrast, the night functionality and wide angle make up for it with very nice pictures in the dark or with an overview picture. We take the images’ sometimes lower resolution and sharpness for granted.

Battery and charging

What’s really impressive about the Oppo Reno 8 is the fast charging feature and the battery. With a 4500 mAh battery, your device can easily last a few days with light use, something that is definitely not possible with many other smartphones. This is due, among other things, to the smart energy-saving functions on the device and in the software.

If you use your device very intensively or if it is empty in the meantime, you can recharge the Reno 8 in no time. Thanks to the 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging function, your device is already 50% charged in 10 minutes. Your device will be fully charged again in just over 20 minutes. It’s simply brilliant.

Software

Android users can in principle switch to Oppo Reno 8 without problems, but have to get used to ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12. An operating system and a custom form of Android created especially for Oppo. In general, you won’t notice much of a difference, and sometimes certain customized solutions are really of added value. For example, you can move apps as a package on your home screen and launch some apps faster thanks to a quick launch feature.

What some users will find useful is that certain apps are already installed on the device by default. Think of popular social networking apps like Facebook and TikTok. Fortunately, if you don’t mind the extra bloatware, you can remove these apps.

Conclusion

With the Oppo Reno 8, you really have a really good smartphone in your hands. Do you like a large, crystal clear screen and beautiful design? Then the Reno 8 is a device you should definitely consider. I would say that a case is included because the device is so smooth that unfortunately it easily slides out of your hands or off the table.

True photography enthusiasts will probably not end up with this device: this smartphone takes excellent photos in the dark and has a nice wide-angle and selfie camera. Still, the resolution and sharpness of images can be better than what you get with this device. Definitely not a showstopper if you’re just looking for a luxurious and lightning-fast Android-based device.

Small disclaimer: this device is obviously not fully Android, with its own operating system (ColorOS 12.1, a derivative of Android 12) it is hoped that the software of the Oppo Reno 8 will also be made suitable for the upgrade to Android 13. This may take some time longer and you will therefore have to wait a little longer for new features in this OS update.

The biggest advantage of the Oppo Reno 8 besides the design is undoubtedly the powerful 4500 mAh battery. This lasts a long time and is also charged to 100% in less than half an hour. Where do you find such a powerhouse.
