Registration to participate in the public Design competition for bio-based and nature-inclusive construction at the Nieuwe Veemarkt in Zwolle is open today. The competition, which was launched by the municipality of Zwolle, is the second competition in the programme A new building culture, with which the Government’s advisors want to stimulate bio-based and nature-inclusive construction. The aim of this initiative is to make innovation and acceleration coincide with the sustainability of housing, whereby construction is in balance with its natural environment.
Climate-safe and healthy living environment
The municipality of Zwolle wants to become a city where people live and work in a climate-safe, healthy and mixed living environment. This housing environment consists of mixed housing landscapes with durable, sustainable, flexible housing concepts that are affordable for several groups in the long term. With Design competition for bio-based and nature-inclusive construction at the Nieuwe Veemarkt in Zwolle The municipality of Zwolle invites architects to create a spatial design of a construction site that fits into the vision of the Nieuwe Veemarkt area. The buildings are bio-based, nature inclusive, affordable and adaptable. The training is mixed and includes housing in different forms, price categories and types, mobility hub, smaller workplaces, (collective) facilities and outdoor spaces. Part of the building site is developed at residential level, including (collective) outdoor space.
Participation, rules and questions
The competition has been organized by the municipality of Zwolle in collaboration with the Board of Government Advisors. Participation in the competition is open to architects who, in light of the interdisciplinary nature of the task, involve additional expertise from other areas. The procedure concerns a design competition in two rounds following a public pre-selection. The rules and annexes can be downloaded from the Architectuur Lokaal website.

Registration and preselection
The procedure concerns a design competition in two rounds following a public pre-selection. Interested parties can apply by submitting a portfolio consisting of business data, reference projects and a motivation for registration.
Registration for the preliminary election takes place via the website for Architectuur Lokaal.
The application deadline ends on Tuesday 22 November at 10.00 (morning).
A selection committee selects a maximum of five portfolios. Entrants are encouraged to enter the competition itself by submitting an entry.
The first round of the competition has the character of an ideas competition, where the participants are asked to submit a global vision for a designated construction site within the framework of the public space, as defined in the area vision. Each of the participating teams receives a contribution to the costs of € 3,000 excl. VAT. An independent jury of experts selects a maximum of three entries for elaboration in the second round.
In the second round of the competition, the participants are asked to elaborate on their vision for the construction field, including a freely selectable exemplary partial elaboration with a business case.
The contributions will be exhibited. The reactions of visitors to the exhibition will be made available to the jury. The jury selects one winner.
Each of the participating teams receives a contribution to the costs of € 25,000 excl. VAT. This ends the contest.
The municipality of Zwolle intends to implement the winning plan and to allocate the land to one or more parties for this purpose. To this end, the municipality plans to award the winner a contract for the development of the mixed housing block within the Nieuwe Veemarkt area.

That Design competition for bio-based and nature-inclusive construction at the Nieuwe Veemarkt in Zwolle is an initiative of the Board of Government Advisors (CRa). The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Internal and State Relations, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the State’s Estate Agent and Staatsbosbeheer.
The municipality of Zwolle is the organizer of the competition. Partners in Zwolle housing associations SWZ, Public Interest and Delta Wonen, represented by SWZ. The implementation is supervised by Architectuur Lokaal.
