AirPods Pro 2 has better sound but does not yet support lossless audio. Apple employee Andersen explains why.
Read on after the ad.
AirPods Pro 2 does not have lossless audio
With the introduction of AirPods Pro 2, it became clear that the new generation of AirPods Pro also does not support lossless audio. This despite several rumors that the AirPods Pro 2 would have a lossless Bluetooth function. Unfortunately, these rumors turned out to be untrue.
There is a big disadvantage to wireless audio because there is a lot of quality loss. Wireless audio files are made smaller, which lowers quality. With lossless audio, the files are much smaller, so the quality does not deteriorate significantly. For example, your music or your phone conversation will sound much better wirelessly with lossless audio.
New design AirPods Pro 2 provides better sound
AirPods Pro 2 looks almost identical in design to the first generation AirPods Pro, but the ears have been completely redesigned on the inside. The microphone on the AirPods Pro 2 has been moved, and the new AirPods Pro only have one opening left.
With this new design, bass and noise reduction have been improved. One of the new features of AirPods Pro 2 is ‘Adaptive Transparency’. This muffles loud sounds in your environment. For example, you can still hear a loud siren, but much less loud. Despite the good AirPods Pro 2 sound, lossless is unfortunately still missing.
Apple employee explains lack of lossless audio
Esge Andersen, who has been with Apple for eleven years, laid the foundation MacRumors explains why lossless support was not chosen. According to Andersen, it was not necessary to switch to lossless because the new design of the headphones already improves the sound significantly. By improving the airflow in AirPods Pro 2, the sound is less likely to be distorted and the sound quality is much better.
Reliability is also an important reason why lossless audio has not yet been chosen. Apple has never been interested in lossless before, and choosing it now would be a risk. By using the old AAC codec, which does not support lossless audio, this risk was avoided. Especially since the AirPods Pro 2 sound without lossless is already very good according to Andersen.
AirPods 3 with lossless sound?
The second generation of AirPods Pro has therefore not received lossless support, but it is likely that the third generation will. It took three years for the AirPods Pro to get a successor, so you’ll have to wait a bit for the AirPods Pro 3.
In these three years, Apple can experiment a lot with lossless audio, especially now that the new AirPods Max firmware already has an improved Bluetooth codec. With this codec, lossless sound comes much closer, for both AirPods Max and Pro 3. Lossless support may thus become the new feature in the third generation of AirPods Pro.
