As 2022 draws to a close, Tinder shares its year in SwipeTM: from new relationship brands and attitudes to social issues, to down-to-earth dating trends and the new emojis popping up in chat. Year in Swipe shows which dating trends, activities and interests were most popular among Dutch daters in 2022.
5 hottest trends on Tinder in 2022
#1. Young singles (18-15 years) see the ‘situational relationship’ as real relationship status. More than a hookup, but not quite a traditional relationship. In 2022, the “situational relationship” is known as a casual and non-binding relationship where this status is clearly stated. Tinder saw a 49%1 increase in the number of members globally adding this new relationship status to their profile. More than 1 in 10 young singles worldwide said they prefer situations as a way to develop a relationship with less pressure2.
#2. The dinner date is passé. It seems that the activities we often participated in during the pandemic have stuck. Mentions of “Picnicken” and “Museum” in Dutch Tinder bios have increased this year2, which may mean that singles today are meeting through more than just dinner and drinks, choosing less traditional and more authentic ways to get to know each other know. Other creative activities such as pottery making, karaoke and taking a cooking class all feature in the top 10 activities on Tinder dates in the Netherlands.
#3. Zodiac signs were one of the most popular topics on Tinder profiles. The zodiac signs Aries, Leo and Pisces were used most in profiles in the Netherlands. Globally these were Leo, Scorpio and Cancer. Surprisingly, all zodiac signs were most likely to match exactly the same zodiac sign1.
#4. Young singles are inspired by the dating trends of the 90s. The fastest growing interests on Tinder worldwide were past trends like Kid, Anime and Sneakers from the 90s. Even everyone’s favorite “new” old song, “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, made a comeback and featured in Spotify’s global top 10 songs mentioned on Tinder profiles1.
#5. Views on social issues can make or break a match. Three quarters of singles worldwide were looking for a match who was interested in social issues2. In fact, this year so many Tinder members added the Ukrainian flag to their profile to show support for Ukraine that at one point it was among the top 10 global trending emojis on the app. In addition, interests in activism and suffrage have increased in the Netherlands this year2.
