Data-driven innovation meets sustainable PC design: Concept Luna’s Evolution

Imagine a future where we don’t just throw away used electronics. Instead, we collect individual parts for a second, third or even fourth life. When the device itself has really reached the end of its life, we refurbish and recycle it to use the same materials in the next generation of laptops, monitors or phones. It’s a future where nothing goes to waste, and the mountain of electronics thrown away every year (more than 57 million tons worldwide, to be exact) is significantly reduced. We dematerialize the technology, and furthermore, the materials we use stimulate a strong circular economy. In this way, we limit the need for new raw materials.

Streamline computer design
A year ago, we introduced Concept Luna, our groundbreaking sustainable PC design, which illustrates our vision of how to reduce waste and emissions, recycle materials and achieve a higher level of innovation. Over the past year, engineers from our Experience Innovation Group have been working to further refine Concept Luna’s modular design. In doing so, they eliminated the need for glue and cables and kept the use of screws to a minimum. This makes it easier to repair and dismantle a system. Concept Luna can drastically simplify and speed up repair and disassembly. The parts are more accessible and the possibilities for recycling increase.

With today’s technology of screws, glues and various soldered parts, it can sometimes take recycling partners more than an hour to disassemble a PC. With our new Concept Luna design, we have reduced the time required for disassembly to just a few minutes. We even commissioned a micro-factory to oversee our design team. This has led to a device that can quickly and easily take robots apart.

The circular revolution
By combining Luna’s sustainable design with intelligent telemetry and robotic automation, we have created something that can revolutionize the industry and drive circularity at scale. A single sustainable device is one thing, but the true opportunity lies in the potential impact on the millions of technical devices sold each year, and in optimizing the materials in those devices for recycling, refurbishing or recycling.

The telemetry we’ve added to Luna also allows us to diagnose the health of individual system components, so nothing goes to waste. Because the way customers use their technology is different, not all parts go live at the same time. For example, people who work from home may use external components, such as keyboards and monitors. The keyboard and screen of the laptop were hardly used at the time, while the motherboard already needs to be replaced. Our new concept Luna can deliver individual components and connect them with telemetry to optimize their lifetime. In short, it is similar to how we maintain our cars: We don’t throw the whole car away when we need new tires or brakes.

The future is modular
By continuing to work on the Concept Luna, we are getting closer to a future where more devices with a modular design will be designed. The exciting addition of robotics and automation serves as a catalyst to speed up the efficient disassembly of devices, measure the condition and remaining usefulness of parts, and better understand which parts can be recycled, refurbished or recycled – so nothing goes to waste. This vision has far-reaching and profound implications for us, our customers and the industry as a whole as we work together to reduce e-waste.

These are the discoveries that inspire our team of engineers, passionate sustainability experts and designers to continue developing Concept Luna. Luna is now “just a concept”, but still contains a long-term vision of how we can achieve even greater business and societal impact through circular design.
