The driver of the sweeper was seriously injured after the collision and had to be resuscitated at the scene. It didn’t help though. He’s still dead. “We feared for his life. It didn’t look good at all,” says 43-year-old Gaby Kreutz.

‘It was very ugly’

Kreutz and her four children watched the accident happen from their car. “We saw the train coming in the distance as the lights from the railway barriers just went out. The booms were not fully closed when the train arrived at the level crossing. Of course, that’s not true. Unfortunately, it is more common at that particular railroad crossing. I always warn my kids about that place.”

After the collision, Kreutz sees several drivers get out to give first aid to the victim. ,, Me and my children have seen that person. Horrible to watch.” Wanting to protect her children, Kreutz backs up her car. “In my opinion, there were already enough people and I thought it was really too intense for my children. I’m used to it, but a 4-year-old child shouldn’t see that kind of thing.”

Victim support

The accident happened at a crossing with railway barriers. It is still unclear how the road sweeper and the train collided. The police will investigate this further. Among other things, he flew a drone over the accident site. Pro Rail is also on site. He will check if the track is damaged and if the train can be put back on the tracks.

Kreutz suspects that a defect was the cause of the accident. “I could hardly see the road sweeper, but I am sure that the train arrived faster than the barriers were closed. I told the police that. I hope they can do something with my information.” Kreutz is considering calling Victim support for his children. “It is not something we have seen. That sweeper – I thought it was a car – had become a wreck. People are running and panicking everywhere. Everything is starting to land a bit now.”

Train derailed

The driver of the train suffered head injuries, three passengers were slightly injured. One of them was taken to hospital, two others were checked at the scene by paramedics and did not need to go to hospital. Initially, the emergency services spoke of two injured passengers, but according to the police there appear to be three.

The train partially derailed in front. “It was a big mess,” says Kreutz. “There was so much dust I couldn’t even see the train properly.” According to the safety region, the train driver and 34 passengers were on the train. The passengers were taken off the train at around 16.15 and taken to the town hall in Horst aan de Maas. They are taken care of there, and there is victim support where necessary, says the spokesperson.

Big alarm

A police spokesman could not say exactly how the accident happened at the level crossing on the Spoorstraat. “It has not yet been investigated,” he said. It is not clear to the police whether the train collided with the road sweeper or vice versa. – The sweeper ended up on the side of the road approximately 30 meters away, says the spokesman. “The train stops about 100 meters away.” According to the spokesman, this indicates that it has been a big blow.

The accident happened around 2:40 p.m. The emergency services sounded the alarm.

No trains

According to ProRail, the accident caused extensive damage to the infrastructure. The damage on the pitch is extensive. This makes train traffic between Venlo and Venray impossible. “The initial estimate is that the repair work will take until the end of the day tomorrow,” ProRail said. NS reports that no trains will run before 6pm on Thursday. Buses run between Venray, Blerick and Venlo.

The railway crossing on the Spoorstraat was closed for a few hours on Wednesday evening in connection with the investigation by, among others, the police.

Previous incident

Earlier this week, a sad event took place in more or less the same place. A train driver died during a night journey on Christmas Day between Nijmegen and Roermond. He probably suffered a cardiac arrest after stopping the train at Tienray due to a collision with a deer.
