The Peugeot 408 is not, for once, the new Peugeot 408. Perhaps a little hard to understand, but there has never been a 408 before. At least not in the past 30 years. The number fascinates, because where should you place this Peugeot 408.

To begin with, the Peugeot 408 is the Peugeot 308’s big brother. It is on the exact same platform as the 308 and is also roughly 50% the same car. In that sense, it is a larger 308. With that as a starting point, I understand Peugeot. The 308 is quite sporty and also quite low. The SUV version of the 308 is the 3008 and it has an XXL version called the 5008. So we skip the 4008 name, which means Peugeot must have had plans for a new 4 a long time ago. in that sentence this had to be a 408, because otherwise 4008 would have been completely illogical.

The expiration date of the 3008 is a topic

With the introduction of the Peugeot 408, you immediately complete the range commercially. The sporty Peugeot 308, especially praised for its design, clearly has its own target group and is not really an ideal family car. Then you end up faster with the 3008 and 5008. These SUVs are now approaching their expiration date. Several facelifts have given the 3008 some new impetus, but after its initial introduction in 2008, the model is now getting a bit old. There are now enough spy shots of a new 3008 floating around the ‘internet’. And it may just be that it gets a suspicious number of functions from the 408.

In terms of design, is this the most beautiful Peugeot of the past 30 years?

This 408 (again built on the now proven EMP2 platform) is currently the new face of Peugeot. Bold, clearly more streamlined than its relatives and has a contemporary look. Perhaps this is one of the most beautiful models of the last 30 years.

In that regard, this could be one of the potential candidates for “Car of the Year” (now confirmed). This is partly due to the jury’s apparently unconscious preference for cars with a lion on the nose. However, it is still subcutaneously a Peugeot 308 and it has already been inspected and weighed.

Compact SUV, hatchback or coupé Crossover

The reflections surrounding the choice of a 408 can best be explained because with a new car you also try to position it. Especially in the case of Stellantis, which now has a nice fleet on the platform of, among others, the 308. Who will be the logical buyer, where will it stand in the wide range and will this model initially make existing Peugeot drivers fall in love with this model. If you see the car and experience it yourself, it will feel familiar after the first few metres. You can already check that the 408 is doing well in the lease, just as this new Peugeot is also getting attention from the current 3008 drivers.

In any case, the design of the Peugeot 408 is innovative and fresh enough to challenge your neighbors on the street. The question is, is it now a compact SUV, a hatchback or is it a coupé Crossover? We’ll stick with the latter, even though it’s not yet an official category.

The Peugeot 408 is primarily about the design

The Peugeot 408 has a nice design that comes into its own with 20-inch rims. It’s still one thing because the 408 comes standard on 17-inch alloy wheels, and that’s a shame in every way. Standard wheels also mean standard looks. However, if you see it with 19 inch and preferably with 20 inch rims, the design gets a kind of boost. Everything looks the same as the designers must have thought of it. The high ground clearance in combination with a low roofline, which gives the 408 a sporty appearance, also comes into its own much better.

With a length of 4.68 meters, the 408 is one of the largest models in the Peugeot range. Only the 508 sedan is slightly longer. At Peugeot, they traditionally always pay extra attention to the car’s face, the front, the front, the nose. Which is, whatever you want to call it, more than successful and again shows a lot of style and a lot of guts. The grid has a beautiful black grid structure as standard. With the GT, the grille has the color of the body, which makes it just a bit nicer, especially in combination with the slim full-LED headlights.

Peugeot 408 interior: i-Cockpit 3D and i-Toggles

Once behind the wheel, this new version of i-Cockpit 3D is again something of a recognition party. Just like the well-known small and flat sports steering wheel. This exclusive Peugeot signature still looks modern and refreshing after quite a few years. It is becoming clear that the concept of i-Cockpit with head-up display and 10-inch touchscreen can still be used for a while.

New to the 408 are the fully customizable Peugeot i-Toggles. This allows you to decide for yourself what your most important functions are when you’re on the go. You can save the preferences for this in your own profile. As far as I’m concerned, Peugeot could put this kind of settings much better in an app, so you can also look at your real preferences offline at your convenience.

The standard seat upholstery consists of black accents with gray and exudes a certain luxury that suits this 408. This upholstery can also be found in the dashboard, providing a certain calmness and balance. The dashboard consists of two screens, one of which is intended for infotainment on the 408.

The end of smart poker

Peugeot markets the 408 with three powertrains, consisting of two plug-in hybrids and an internal combustion engine-only model. All versions have 8-speed automatic transmission as standard (the old fancy lever is finally gone) with the familiar 1.2-liter three-cylinder with standard 130 hp and 230 Nm of torque. In addition to this version, there is a significantly more powerful plug-in hybrid and a top model with 225 hp.

The ultimate wannahave version is the GT version, which has slightly more design features and power overall with different taillights, LED matrix headlights, a colorful grill and Peugeot badges on the side.

The aforementioned 20-inch wheels would only be available on the most expensive version, again fitting with French stubbornness. Furthermore, the 408 is available as standard in three shades of metallic: black, silver gray and dark grey. For a white or red (also metallic) you have to pay extra, just like for the well-known Peugeot blue introductory colour.

All models are richly equipped with all important safety systems. Depending on package selection and necessary extras, you will find virtually every imaginable option in this Peugeot 408. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also available as standard for those who prefer to connect their smartphone.

How much does a Peugeot 408 cost

What is the cost of this new model from Peugeot, which unfortunately only comes with a fully electric version from 2024. The base model, the Peugeot 408 Allure, better known as the entry-level model, will soon cost 41,490 euros. In addition, you get the well-known three-cylinder 1.2 Puretech (130 hp) with 8-speed automatic transmission. The question is whether you should choose this. Ultimately, a Hybrid version is considerably more attractive. You then only click on a different price level.

The Peugeot 408 plug-in hybrid costs more than 46,000 euros equipped with an output of 180 hp, but more importantly with a plug. If you don’t think 180 horses is enough, there is a 225 hp version for a price just under 50,000 euros. Depending on the equipment level, you have some intermediate options.
