Really atmospheric setup of Wintervillage Stadshart Amstelveen 2017

The message from Stadshart Amstelveen on 13 November 2017 stated: 29 November 2017 to 7 January 2018: XL edition Winter Village at Stadshart Amstelveen. Ice Slider, dating on the ice, Sony Playlink Truck, an outdoor ice rink and atmospheric Christmas market during the XL edition of the Winter Village. Our editors paid a brief visit on Saturday afternoon, 2 December 2017, read: walked around in the freezing cold, between the ‘Alpenchalets’ on the Stadsplein. Although the PR machinery in Stadshart often runs smoothly, the editors of Amstelveenweb.com received no follow-up notice at all, except at the beginning of November, that another Winter Village would be built in Stadshart. Not even about the festive opening ceremony of the Winter Village Stadshart Amstelveen that would take place from 2pm on Saturday 2 December 2017 with live performances by Danny Froger and Patrick Willemse. The communication of the Winter Village Stadshart Amstelveen is in the hands of the Winter Village Netherlands Foundation in Soest, and they probably forgot that a small town has many big news media that could spread their news. Amstelveenweb.com was already in the village at ½ past 12 and did not have to wait another two hours in the freezing cold.

The difference from last year was immediately noticeable, because instead of soup, cheese and salami sausage stalls, this time there were many huts with various hot snacks, really as it should be in a Winter Village. There were now also cabins with real winter things such as knitted colorful winter hats and lots of Christmas trees here and there, because this time visitors can buy a Christmas tree on Bytorvet. Everything was on sale in the huts to warm up: Stop and Eats with fresh chips and bitterballen, hot chocolate or glühwein, Van de Dobben croquette sandwiches, hot fried Krakow sausages from a turntable that turned over a fire, a real smokehouse next door of a Rolling Fish green double-decker bus with various (smoked) fish products, hot meat and bratwurst. In another cabin, you could have your picture taken, sitting on a sled against a winter background or between two Christmas trees.

In Schwenkgrillen, a rotatable grill (Saarland: Schwenker) is a traditional grill for preparing meat dishes, such as here especially many different types of sausage

The editors at Amstelveenweb.com paid close attention to Naughty Nuts with a huge selection of roasted nuts from Iran, Turkey, Greece, but also all kinds of pickled olives, feta, spicy stuffed peppers, sweet and spicy all mixed together. The editors enjoyed it, especially because everyone can taste everything from nuts and sweets. She bought this tent for 30 euros, but it is also very tasty!

At ‘Naughty Nuts’ we received an English explanation about the types of delicacies from this young man from Iran. In Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece, street vendors roast fresh nuts in pans over an open fire and sprinkle
aromatic herb and spice mixtures on top.
The result is a wonderful aroma and honestly, it’s the best street food ever!

This year there was a large Ice Slider in the Winter Village next to the outdoor ice rink of over 450 m². The Ice Slider thus completes the XL version and guarantees winter fun for young and old. Children from five years old were allowed to slide down from a great height while sitting on an inflatable tire: slide 3 times for 5 euros. Sony will be on site with a Sony Playlink Truck during the first week of Winter Village. This is a truck where game lovers can collectively play ‘playlink’: an application for using smartphones with Playstation4. With Playlink, the smartphone is used as a game controller and there is the possibility of more interaction in games that you play with a group.

For many children, it takes some getting used to on the ice

Many children use an orange plastic reindeer as support, and this is really necessary for some

There was a prominent flyer on a fence with the text from the organizers: ‘Anyone who enters the Winter Village consents to video, photo and audio recordings in which he/she may be included. The organization may use these recordings for promotional purposes. You cannot derive any rights from this. These photos belong to the Winter Village organization.’ So you have been warned!

These children are not very cheerful because they have to be very careful not to slip on the ice

But in the meantime, many children have had a nice time skating on the ice and it is very nice, because due to the mild winters, ice can often only be found in the freezer drawer of the Dutch and skating on natural ice is starting to form a vague historical image.

Suddenly Stalhouderij Zadelhoff’s carriage with the inscription ‘Magazijn de Bijenkorf’ drove across the square with two beautiful Friesian black horses (‘Black Pearls of the Netherlands’) with a tower of gift boxes on the roof. This Bijenkorf van was built by the Neeleman company in Zevenhuizen and is used for promotional purposes.

The Friesian horses (also Friesian) are a horse breed from Friesland. Although the breed’s structure resembles a light draft horse, Friesians are graceful and light-footed for their size and very calm. It is believed that the ancestors of Friesian horses were highly sought after as war horses throughout continental Europe during the Middle Ages. In the (early) Middle Ages, the horses could carry a knight in armor due to their size. In the late Middle Ages, heavier draft animals were needed. Although the breed has almost died out several times, the modern Friesian horse is growing in numbers and popularity these days

It was of course a kind of invitation to visit the department store, especially since many people were handed a key by an employee of De Bijenkorf. With the key you could try to open a safe to win a prize, but unfortunately our keys did not fit in the lock of the safe. However, the goal of Bijenkorf has been achieved, to attract many people, because in a short time dozens of people gathered around the vault to try their luck.

The Friesian horses from Stalhouderij De Zadelhoff have a good nature and are very popular with children due to their high level of cuteness. The big smart department stores, such as Harrod’s in London or Hermes in Paris, used to be happy to deliver the goods bought by important customers at home. It also happened at the De Bijenkorf warehouse in Amsterdam. The deliveries took place not only in the city itself, but also on the nearby country estates. This equipment served as a business card for the company. The etiquette, the clothing of the staff, the harnessed horses, the harness with the copper Bijenkorf logo and the delivery cart, everything is still taken care of down to the last detail

Instead of the black climbers since 2015, there are so-called golden shoots in the warehouses in Bijenkorf. Here in the picture, a huge silver Piet hangs between the escalators and attracts a lot of attention

It was hot in De Bijenkorf and the editors thought of buying a cup of coffee in the cafe on the first floor, but the cafe was closed, maybe we hadn’t been on the first floor for too long??!! In the open floor-to-ceiling space next to the escalators, one could admire a flying ‘Black Pete-like’ creation with a winder on its back. It was pulled up on two steel wires and then thrown back. down. After enjoying the winter atmosphere of Stadshart Amstelveen for two hours, we headed home. Just in time, because all access roads to the parking garages on the Stadsplein were blocked by dozens of cars, because so many people suddenly had the same idea: We should go to the Stadsplein and see the XL version of Winter Village Amstelveen! It’s really worth it!
