Running your growth business from the bedroom is not what Kiki had in mind, and Sjors wants to grow too. Employees who use the toilet in the bathroom really need to be a step more professional, they thought.
The possibilities lay in the large shed next to the house. But getting them into the house was a challenge. Desired: it really shouldn’t be a standard ‘flat extension’. A straight extension with a skylight is therefore not an option. Fortunately, architects Gimill Mual and Laurien Keller couldn’t wait to come up with the perfect solution for the two of them.
If it is not unique…
Gimil started with his design. He immediately removes a number of walls and breaks the room completely open. “Because I removed the wall between the kitchen and the living room, a large eat-in kitchen has been created at the heart of the new home,” he explains to Kiki and Sjors.
And it was well received: “Very nice, because we really missed the connection with the kitchen and the dining table”, replies Sjors enthusiastically.
He also started work on the shed and created a very spectacular connection to the garden from the pantry. Gimil: “I extended the extension to the neighbors and had this room completely closed off from the kitchen with the help of a large sliding door.”
In addition, he designed the forms of the half-timbering towards the garden especially for them. “The wooden construction is tailor-made for Sjors, because you are so handy. But the shape is based on Kiki. I let Kiki’s K come back a little in the shape of the facade and in the roof”.
“This shape is really wow! So unique and almost our logo. Fantastic!” Kiki immediately shouts. “I can’t wait to get started,” adds a beaming Sjors.
Finally, he has really closed off the work area from the house with a very beautiful cloister. What a design!
In another way
Architect Laurien has not yet been blown away. With great pleasure, she also reveals her insight into the house and the warehouse with the couple.
IN no time you see walls disappear and there is space for a kitchen. With a gigantic front to the garden, they also create a really nice connection with the outside and they get a lot of daylight.
Laurien: “The living room felt narrow. By including the hall, you get a much more spacious feeling. The hall is very beautiful and can therefore also be seen. That way, the house will be completely yours.”
“I think the sight lines are really cool in this design. You immediately have a fantastic view of the garden”, is Kiki’s enthusiastic reply.
A study that you say to
Laurien has also tackled the warehouse. With a workshop for Sjors, a terrace in the middle, lots of glass, round doors and more than enough work space.
Sjors: “It’s great to break it up like this, our garden will be much bigger with the terrace.” And Kiki complements him: “For me, this design really has wow factor. It fits us and our lives perfectly. I can see myself walking in here.”
With two wonderful plans in their pockets, the two went home to show it to friends, family and their employees.
Kiki: “You come home, show the plans to everyone, and then you start to have doubts. What do we really want? Both architects listened very carefully to our wishes. That doesn’t make it easy.”
They want to get started as soon as possible and in the end choose Laurien’s plans, after which Sjors can immediately press on.
To save costs, he will largely be in charge of the renovation in the coming months, and Kiki will run the concept store and her jewelry company alone. Quite a task for both, but all for a good cause.
Out of the box and inspiring
Sjors goes at it like his life depended on it. And since the warehouse is already well underway, the two get final approval from the municipality to renovate the house. They spend months in the rubble and sometimes have to help the other, but the result is truly amazing.
Laurien’s plans have been implemented everywhere and even developed further in certain places. Sjors says: “We are so happy with the spaciousness you have created in the design, Laurien. We thought we had a small house, but that is not the case at all.”
“That was actually the idea behind the design of the warehouse,” she replies enthusiastically. “By introducing the sight lines very clearly, you create spaciousness.”
Laurien is really amazed by the result, also in the house. “The rooms were so good! And then that built-in wardrobe with sliding door, beautiful. It also feels really good. It is a luxurious living room. I also think it’s very clever how they complete the mission ‘keep living and working separate’ really fulfilled. And for me as an architect, it is very nice to see that they have really taken my design to heart and implemented it down to the smallest detail.”
“It is also very unreal that it is all ours. Everything is so beautiful. I hardly dare to use the kitchen because I’m afraid of doing something wrong”, adds a very happy Sjors.
What about the budget?
Kiki and Sjors had a budget of €140,000 to complete this gigantic renovation. Of course, it made a huge difference in the costs that Sjors can do a lot himself, but did they manage it?
Kiki: “We not only saved on the building costs, but we also made a lot of the furniture ourselves. The dining table would cost more than €2,500 in the store, and we made it ourselves for €350. Then, of course, it goes quickly.”
Sjors: “I think we ended up spending €180,000. A lot of money, but we could also save extra because the renovation took longer. It didn’t stress us out much.”
Laurien is therefore completely impressed with what they have done and especially for this budget. “Hats off to them!”
